what IS breathwork?

learn more about this transformational practice here.

breathwork (n) \ ˈbreth-ˌwərk \

: conscious, controlled breathing done especially for relaxation, meditation, or therapeutic purposes.

Did you know that your breath is the only body function that is both voluntary AND involuntary?

That truth is where the power of breathwork lies.

Breathwork has many origins. Yogis. Sufis. Monks. Buddhists. Shamanic practices. Breathwork can be found in cultures around the world. I first began practicing breathwork in 2017 after receiving a small book in the mail for review. My initial impressions of breathwork were much like Lamaze, patterned breathing accompanied by counting. I quickly discovered that it’s much more than that. It is a powerful tool for healing yourself on a cellular level.

Through transformational breathwork, YOU have the power to change your story. The power of breathwork is that it’s YOUR work. On a physiological level, the control of the breath has the power to clear old trauma and stories that no longer serve you. It’s difficult to explain but incredible to experience. If you allow yourself to open to it, it has the power to change your life.

What can you expect during a session?

A breathwork session typically lasts around 60 minutes. If you’re brand new to breathwork I will walk you through it before we start. An average session is structured like this:

  • a few minutes to discuss the intentions of the session and to answer any questions you might have

  • a breathwork session of 12-30 minutes involving a particular kind of breath I will teach you when we begin.

  • a cooling-off rest period of 5-15 minutes

“Listen, are you breathing just a little and calling it a life?”

What can you expect on an emotional/physical level?

  • you might cry

  • I encourage a good yell at the end of the intense part of the session

  • it’s a good idea after the session to have some time to journal your experience and rest.

  • you might be tired, elated, a little of both.
